أسألهم أن يأخذوا قصيدة | |
ويرفعوها إزاء الضوء | |
مثل شريحة لون. | |
أو أن يضعوا أذنا صاغية على خلية نحلها. | |
أقول لهم اسقطوا جرذا في قصيدة | |
وراقبوا كيف يتلمس طريقه خارجا منها. | |
أو امشوا داخل حجرة القصيدة | |
وتلمسوا الجدران بحثا عن زر إنارة. | |
أريدهم أن يتزلجوا فوق سطح قصيدة | |
ملوحين إلى اسم مؤلفها على الشاطئ. | |
ولكن كل ما يريدونه | |
هو أن يربطوا القصيدة بحبل إلى كرسي | |
وينتزعوا اعترافا منها بالتعذيب. | |
يبدأون بضربها بخرطوم ماء | |
كي يكتشفوا معناها الحقيقي. | |

and hold it up to the light | |
like a color slide | |

I say drop a mouse into a poem | |
and watch him probe his way out, | |

or walk inside the poem's room | |
and feel the walls for a light switch. | |

I want them to waterski | |
across the surface of a poem | |
waving at the author's name on the shore. | |

But all they want to do | |
is tie the poem to a chair with rope | |
and torture a confession out of it. | |
